How Stress Works
God gave us emotions for a reason. Yet, we must allow God to temper them according to His Word. If our emotions cause us to sin, we must apply biblical wisdom and respond according to God’s righteous standard.
Emotions have consequences.
Have you ever...
Felt anger pulse through your body like a steam engine?
Wondered why your face turns red hot when you’re embarrassed?
Been curious about why your heart races or skips a beat when you’re scared or anxious?
There is a reason.
The emotional center in our brain shoots out nerve impulses to every organ in our body.
So, when we experience emotional stress — it triggers all kinds of physiological changes.
Too much stress and we are at risk for a host of symptoms and diseases. According to the National Institute of Health, chronic stress can contribute to the following conditions:
Suppressed immune system
Increased risk of viral infections
Release of histamines, leading to asthma
Increased risk for diabetes
Concentrated acid in the stomach, leading to ulcers
Plaque-build up, causing atherosclerosis
Psychiatric conditions
Tumor development
Suppression of cancer-fighting (NK) cells
And more
Is it any wonder that God, who loves us and always desires our good and survival, has repeatedly told us in many ways to chill out?
I’ve read that the phrase “fear not” is found 365 times in the Bible — one for each day. I like to test everything, but I could not substantiate that claim.
