Why on the Earth does the Trinity Matter?
How each member of the Godhead gives victory over sin, self, and Satan.
This is Part Three of our series on the Trinity. If you haven’t read posts One and Two, consider doing so before reading on.
In Part One, we exposed three myths about the doctrine of the Trinity: Three Myths about the Doctrine of the Trinity.
Part Two explored the meaning of the word Trinity in orthodox Christianity and showed how it was plainly taught in both the Old and New Testaments: Is the Trinity Doctrine Taught in the Bible?
In this final installment, we will explore how the Trinity is actively destroying the enemies of God so Christ can have his rightful inheritance of the nations. He paid for it with the blood of the cross and will continue to fight against Satan’s Babylonian system, win the war, and then return to receive His spotless bride.
God’s Marching Orders for the Church
Psalm 2 sheds light on God’s purposes for the Church. Much like the mandate to Adam and Eve, as well as Noah, God wants the Church to take dominion of His earth and rule over it in Christ’s name.
The theme of Psalm 2 is the triumph of the Messiah and the victory of His kingdom.
Let’s read it in its entirety:
Why do the nations rage,
And the people plot a vain thing?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
“Let us break Their bonds in pieces
And cast away Their cords from us.”
He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
“Yet I have set My King
On My holy hill of Zion.”
“I will declare the decree:
The Lord has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”
Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
The trajectory of history
In the above passage, we see the trajectory of history: Just as God confounded the people at the tower of Babel (see — Part Two) so also God will continue to frustrate the plans of the elite controllers and evildoers in society. The only way for a civil ruler’s legacy to remain is for them to “Kiss the Son” (Psalm 2:12). Simply put, that means they submit to Him. Otherwise, they will perish along the way.
God’s Word cannot be broken.
We can expect the evil elites that are controlling our society today to fall, fail, and perish. Christ died for the nations. He commissioned the Church to go and get them and teach them His ways so they too could enjoy the blessings promised to Abraham. “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice” (Genesis 22:18). “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:29).
In Psalm 2, the Father promised to give the nations to Christ as His inheritance. See verse 8: "Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession.”
Don’t think for one second that Christ forgot to ask. He paid for the nations with His blood — and He commissioned the Church to go get them in His power (Matthew 28:18-20). Christ is not an impotent wimp. He is an exalted King, with all power and authority in heaven and on earth.
Christ died to take dominion away from Satan
Christ, the second person of the Trinity, died on the cross so that Satan would lose his dominion over this earth. It’s a great reversal.
1 John 3:8: “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
Notice the verse is past tense. The Son of God came to earth the FIRST TIME to destroy the works of the devil. And He accomplished it at the cross. We don’t have to wait for His Second Coming to see Satan put down.
Christ has all authority in heaven and on earth NOW — and He has commissioned us to take dominion over the earth, go get His inheritance of the nations, join with Him to destroy the works of the devil, and teach the nations to obey everything that He commanded.
If we are not fulfilling His commission, but are instead rebelling like those at Babylon, refusing to take dominion of the earth, then we can expect the counsel of Elohim once again to frustrate our plans. We must be about God’s business of taking dominion of this realm God created for us to steward.
Who wins down here?
We have been so conditioned to believe that Satan wins down here on earth, that we ignore key passages in the Old and New Testaments that talk about a triumphant Messiah.
These triumphant passages are almost universally tied to Christ’s incarnation. Yet, we have somehow attached them to His Second Coming.
We may indeed have to give up our lives for future generations. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:13). Christ was the perfect example of this kind of love. But He didn’t do it so we could have pain and misery forever and ever as Christians. Instead, He laid down His life so we could have victory over sin, Satan, and self — and so that we could inherit the nations with Him, for the meek shall inherit the earth (Psalm 37:11; Matthew 5:5).
His Kingdom wins down here.
“And in the days of these kings [the Roman Empire in Christ’s Day] the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever” (Daniel 2:44).
Beloved, this kingdom is under the stewardship and rule of the Church, with Christ as the head (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:15-20).
“I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,
Coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days,
And they brought Him near before Him.” — Daniel 7:13.
The above verse speaks of the ascension of Christ, where He goes up to the Ancient of Days (the Father).
“Then to Him (Christ) was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.” — Daniel 7:14.
At the ascension, the Father gave the dominion of the earth to the Son, and the dominion cannot be revoked. It is an everlasting dominion. The purpose of the Church is to take the earth for Christ in His mighty power. Not just to make disciples (or save souls) — but to save the world. “For God so loved the world (cosmos), that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
Yes. Salvation of souls is included — but so is the cosmos. As it is, even the creation groans under the weight of sin, waiting for righteousness to be revealed in men (Romans 8:22).
When wickedness increases beyond an acceptable level — the land vomits out its inhabitants (Leviticus 18:25) so the land can heal (2 Chronicles 36:21).
Are we there yet?
There is another way for God to heal a land.
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

When comes the end?
Psalm 110:1 is the most quoted and alluded to passage in the New Testament. “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.’”
Christ sat at the Father’s right hand at the ascension. He’s sitting there now ruling from heaven — according to Scripture. And He must remain there until all His enemies are a footstool for His feet, in other words, until all His enemies submit to Him and civil rulers “Kiss the Son.”
The Bible says the end won’t come until all these enemies are under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death, then comes the end. See 1 Corinthians 15:24 in context.
If we are expecting things to get worse and worse before Christ returns — we are gravely mistaken. Things will surely get worse. But if we are not fighting with Christ to destroy these evil enemies of His — and are rather rooting them on so Christ will return — then we are actually working for team Satan.

Christ wants to clean up the enemies within, so he can present a glorious bride, without spot or blemish. And He wants to destroy the enemies without — so that all the nations will serve Him and receive the blessings that come from obedience.
This will happen in history — with or without our help. It is the zeal of the LORD of Hosts that will accomplish it (Isaiah 9:7).
We can either with work Him or against Him.
What’s your focus?
Shortly before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told His disciples that they were about to be baptized with the Holy Spirit. However, the disciples had something else on their minds.
“Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6).
Jesus rebuked them, saying, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
God doesn’t want us to focus on the times and seasons of the end. He will take care of those things. Instead, He wants Christians to be filled with the third person of the Trinity — the Holy Spirit — and the source of our power — so we can win the world to Christ and teach the nations to obey God’s Law of Liberty.
That’s our purpose.
We don’t want to neglect our duty and end up like Babylon: confused, scattered, and divided.
It kind of feels like that’s where we are today. Why? We’ve lost our focus on proclaiming Christ’s preeminence (not Satan’s) over all of creation (Colossians 1:18).

What’s holding us back?
The Father promised the victory to the Son; Christ paid for the victory on the cross; and the Holy Spirit empowers the Church to get it.
There is only one thing holding us back from winning this world for Christ, proclaiming His Law-Word (Genesis to Revelation) over all creation, and crushing the works of the devil under our feet: our faith.
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this the victory that has overcome the world — our faith” (1 John 5:4).
